What is Russ doing :
a = using a metal detector ?
b = snake hunting ?
c = mowing the yard ?
Though not as big as our yard back home, I enjoy working in the yard for recreation.
It provides a good break from long hours of language learning.
The local "national" yard keeper, who was clipping the neighbors yard with hand clippers, watched me in amazementt as I broke out this amazing new tool. Really.
He will probably ask to borrow it.
I'll feel guilty if he cuts his foot off.

Russ you are in your element! I love that little thing..it looks like it runs on batteries!! I am sure you will have the most lavish lawn on your street (err road, err lane, err trail...you know what I mean). Hey, buddie we love your family tremendously and keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.
And in closing I think you should let your curious friend get a run or two in with that thingamujig (who knows he may find some buried coins in the yard...whats that? you mean it's not a metal detector!?) Love, Reagan
